How MillTech Paid for Itself

"Finding the right inventory management system for our lumber business was not an easy journey. When I joined the family business, we were operating an outdated system that was slow, difficult to use, and no longer supported our needs. We eventually invested in a replacement, but the implementation failed. After spending more money than planned and seeing little progress, we ended our relationship with that vendor and continued operating with an unsupported system for another 18 months. The limitations of that software forced us to carry significantly more inventory than necessary, tying up valuable working capital.

I met Terry Neal from MillTech at a trade show, and what immediately impressed me was his approach. Unlike many software vendors, Terry took the time to understand our business, our challenges, and our goals. More importantly, he was honest about what MillTech could and could not do. We needed a solution that could accurately manage inventory, handle export documentation and invoicing, provide meaningful reporting, and be easy for our team to use. MillTech delivered on all those requirements.

Having been disappointed before, I was naturally skeptical about making another major investment. To test whether MillTech could truly meet our needs, I challenged Terry to create a report that would show not only what inventory was available today, but what would be available to sell in the weeks and months ahead. He delivered exactly what I was looking for. After seeing the demonstration, I was confident MillTech was the right partner, and I signed the contract.

The implementation exceeded my expectations. We completed the transition over a single weekend, and for the first time, I had confidence in the accuracy of our inventory. MillTech gave us visibility into inventory levels, highlighted excess stock, and provided the reporting tools needed to make informed decisions. We were able to organize our warehouses, pre-sell much of our excess inventory, and improve our purchasing and production planning.

Less than six months after going live, the housing market crashed and created tremendous challenges for the lumber industry. Fortunately, we were prepared. With a clean, organized inventory and the reporting capabilities MillTech provided, we were able to sell forward into our inventory and maintain a large percentage of our stock as pre-sold. This allowed us to replace inventory with lower-cost material faster than many of our competitors and navigate an extremely difficult market with confidence. MillTech provided the insights we needed to make smart business decisions when they mattered most—and the system paid for itself within its first year.

Today, the lumber industry continues to face uncertainty and rapid market changes. What MillTech has consistently provided is visibility, control, and the information needed to make data-driven decisions. Rather than relying on instinct or emotion, we can make decisions based on accurate information and real numbers. That capability has made a meaningful difference in our business.

Looking back, MillTech didn't just help us manage inventory; it changed the way we ran our business. The system gave us the information, control, and confidence needed to make smarter decisions in both good markets and bad."
